How can I learn more about diamond quality before I purchase an engagement ring?

The Gemological Institute of America sets the standard for diamond grading that the entire jewelry industry follows today. Visit their website for ideas on “How To Buy a Diamond” and view our Diamond Education page to learn about the 4C's.

Why is a diamond certificate from an independent laboratory important?

The majority of our diamonds come with a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.) or the American Gem Society (A.G.S.) because we want our customers to feel secure before, during and after their diamond purchase. You can shop for a diamond ring at J. Albert Johnson Jewelers with confidence, knowing that not only do we guarantee what we sell to be exactly as described, but that an independent diamond laboratory with a solid reputation for accuracy and integrity worldwide will substantiate the quality of your purchase. Also of importance is the fact that a diamond with a certificate is easier for the customer to insure and replace in the unfortunate event of a loss.

Can I get an appraisal with my jewelry purchase?

Yes, we will gladly issue an appraisal for insurance purposes with any purchase upon request.

Can I get an item I see on the website or in your store set with other gemstones?

Yes, it is possible to reset many of our pieces with other gemstones. Our jewelers can set the gemstone of your choice into our design, letting you personally create a unique piece of fine jewelry. Please contact us with any requests.

How can I figure out my ring size?

Come in! One of our experts would be happy to size your finger.

How long do repairs take?

Repairs normally takes 5-7 business days, but if you ever need an item faster, please let us know.

What if I want to return a ring that has been sized?

If we have sized the ring for you and you are within the 30 day return period, we would be happy to accept the ring back for exchange. However, rings sized by an outside jeweler would be considered altered and will not be accepted for return, refund, exchange or credit.

I do not know the ring size I need right now – can I have my ring sized by J. Albert Johnson Jewelers at a future date?

Yes! If you are giving a ring as a surprise gift or do not know your ring size, our talented jewelers can size the ring after purchase.

What is J. Albert Johnson's estate jewelry?

Our estate jewelry is any jewelry that has been previously owned. All pieces are polished and refurbished to like new condition and offered at a considerably less than new price.

What is J Albert Johnson Jeweler's position on Conflict Diamonds?

We receive many inquiries from customers who have heard about “conflict diamonds” and who are legitimately concerned about purchasing such diamonds. In 2003, President Bush signed the “Clean Diamond Trade Act” into law, which works to exclude rough “conflict diamonds” from international trade while promoting legitimate trade. Additionally, we only work with suppliers and diamond producers that adhere to the conflict-free Kimberley process. This program is designed to prevent conflict and illicit diamonds from entering the international mainstream diamond trade.

What is the best way to clean & care for a piece of diamond jewelry?

We offer free cleanings and check-ups on all jewelry whether it was purchased here or not. To clean your diamond jewelry at home: prepare a bowl of warm water and add a gentle dish soap. Stir the water and soap until it becomes sudsy. Soak the piece of diamond jewelry for about five minutes. After the jewelry has soaked, brush it with a soft bristled toothbrush to get the dirt off. After you have scrubbed the piece, rinse it with clean water and let it dry. With proper care and maintenance, your diamond jewelry should last you for generations.

Does J. Albert Johnson Jewelers have wish lists?

Absolutely. We encourage our customers to come in and create a wish list. We will keep a permanent record of your wish list on file. When any item is purchased we will remove it from your wish list so it is not duplicated.

Does J. Albert Johnson Jewelers offer repairs?

Yes. We are known for our jewelry repair work. Most simple jewelry repairs can be done while you wait. More complicated repairs including ring sizing, soldering, pearl re-stringing, missing stone replacement, etc… usually take 5-7 days.

Does J. Albert Johnson Jewelers offer watch repair?

Yes. We are able to change most watch batteries, shorten most watch bracelets and replace most watch straps while you wait. Watch overhauls, replacement crystals, and quartz services usually take 2-3 weeks. All watch overhauls come with a 12 month guarantee.

What is the difference between platinum and white gold?

White gold appears very similar to platinum, but the two have different properties and prices. Platinum is extremely dense, which makes a piece of platinum jewelry heavier than a white gold piece of the same design and size. Platinum is hypoallergenic and will not tarnish. Platinum is rarer than gold, which makes it more expensive.
Gold in its pure form (24 karat) is too soft to withstand extensive daily wear, so it is alloyed with other metals to give it strength. White gold is an alloy of gold and other metals including nickel, copper and zinc. It is often plated with rhodium, a platinum group metal that gives white gold its bright white shine.
